- History Of The Defender
-
- Aliens have invaded the earth in a bid to take control of all
- its natural resources. The aliens are currently destroying
- all intelligent lifeforms, including man. Your mission is to
- destroy the aliens and preserve the natural order of our
- planet.
-
-
- Bonus
-
- Bonus ship and bomb awarded every 10000 points during first
- million, every 20000 points during second million, every
- 50000 points during third million, and every 100000 points
- thereafter.
-
- It is possible to play indefinitely, but I wouldn't count on
- this. My highest score is 1,859,075 points; I died on wave 91.
- Don't feel bad if you can't play indefinitely, the game is
- designed to ensure that no human can play indefinitely. By the
- way, the game can register a maximum score of 99,999,975 points.

-
- Game Control Suggestion
-
- The best game-control device is the keyboard, in my opinion.
- Here's how to effectively use the keyboard: use your right
- hand on the numeric-keypad to manoeuver your ship; use your
- right thumb on the INSERT key to smart bomb; use your left
- hand on the TAB or CAPS LOCK key to fire lazers; use your
- left thumb on the SPACE BAR to hyperspace; you may also use
- your left thumb on the ALT key to smart bomb. If you have one,
- keep your third hand poised over the spacebar, ready to hyper
- you out of danger in the twinkling of an eye.
-
- Another cool game-control device is a 4-button joystick with
- a good layout of its buttons. Note that Defender allows the
- user to define the function of each joystick button. How?
- Press the C key when the game prompts you to select a game-
- control device, this will take you to the joystick-calibration
- screen; from there, press the B key and follow the instructions.
-
- Another game-control layout is this: nail your joystick to
- the table, use one hand on the joystick to manoeuver your ship,
- use your other hand on the keyboard to fire, smart bomb, and
- hyperspace.
-
-
- Your Fighter Craft
-
- Your fighter craft is equipped with lazers and smart bombs,
- and is capable of hyperspace. Use lazers to destroy enemies;
- use smart bombs to destroy all enemies on screen; use hyperspace
- to escape immediate danger (warning: your ship may be destroyed
- upon re-entry).
-
-
- Fight The Good Fight
-
- Defender is an aggresive game, not recommended for lukewarm
- Politically-Correct Pacifists and other Invertebrates and
- Herbivores. Freedom is not a trivial matter: Better dead
- than Alien. If you are not willing to fight and die for
- freedom, then you deserve to be dominated and oppressed.
-
-
- Defender Playmates
-
- HUMANOID: Kicks around on a piece of ground in its hometown.
- Protect and rescue abducted Humanoids for bonus points. Use
- Humanoids to score big points by going for pick-ups. What's
- a "pick-up"? A pick-up is when you wait for a Humanoid to be
- captured by a Lander, then destroy the Lander and catch the
- falling Humanoid. Try to keep at least three Humanoids aboard
- your ship so that the next one you catch will be worth the
- highest possible bonus points, 2000. You can land a few
- Humanoids by brushing across a peak in the landscape, however,
- try to avoid landing Humanoids on high peaks.
-
- LANDER: Abducts Humanoids and rises through atmosphere. Due
- to atmospheric pollution, Humanoids will eventually be mutated.
-
- MUTANT: Actually, a Humanoid in its natural state: without
- purpose or cause. Mutants seem to have a split-personality,
- probably caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain; their
- decision-making mechanism is easily confused by abysmal
- ignorance brought about by their total pursuit of worldly
- things. Mutants are hopelessly lost in a gray haze of indecision,
- having no root in themselves, no perception of forward and
- reverse; of right and wrong; of good and evil, always fluctuating
- from side to side; blowing in the wind; sitting on fences.
- Mutants are often mistaken for Politicians.
-
- BOMBER: Comes equipped with bullseye for target practice.
- Watch for strategically (or randomly) placed mines.
-
- POD: Contains anxious swarmers; attack from a fair distance.
- Upon destruction, a random number of swarmers are born, one
- each successive 9 months (CPU time).
-
- SWARMER: Swarmers like to travel together, probably because
- they have no backbone to stand on their own. Don't get caught
- in their crossfire.
-
- BAITER: These guys come into play when you take too long to
- complete a wave, or whenever they feel like it. Beware of
- the MasterBaiter.
-
-
- Is This Heaven Or Just Space?
-
- Space, the final frontier, is entered upon the loss of all
- Humanoids. In space, combat is more difficult and there is
- less points to be scored; but the stars are mighty pretty.
- Your planet (if lost) is returned every fifth wave.
- Remember: in space, no-one can hear you when you scream.
-
-
- Game Hints
-
- If your game is not going anywhere, try these suggestions:
- Waves 01-09: Go for big points by going for pick-ups.
- Use a smart bomb to destroy the Pods, when you
- get three or four of them together.
- Waves 10-19: Well, things get a little interesting at this
- point. Some advanced players may still be
- able to go for pick-ups; if you can't, then
- just kill off all the Landers as soon as
- possible.
- Waves 20-29: At this point, you may want to avoid Mutants.
- Destroy all Humanoids, except one or two. Now
- guard those Humanoids as if your life depends
- on it.
- Waves 30-39: If you make it this far, then you're on your
- own. Be prepared to change your strategy
- often, the same strategy may not work wave
- after wave.
-
-
- Approaching The Game
-
- The following suggestions are strictly my opinions; feel free
- to develop your own strategies.
-
- My approach to Defender is based on self-preservation, rescueing
- Humanoids only when it is convenient for me; however, I tend to
- get a little greedy for pick-ups during the first five waves.
- I will only go out of my way to rescue a Humanoid when the fate
- of the planet depends on it; I'll do anything to avoid the loss
- of my planet -- even commit suicide (virtually, of course).
- Don't knock yourself out trying to protect and rescue all the
- Humanoids -- this is not humanly possible on the higher waves,
- and will lead to a dead end of frustration.
-
- Your success will probably depend on the order in which you
- destroy your enemies. There is a particular order in which I
- destroy my enemies: first, I smart bomb the Pods; then I go after
- the Landers; followed by the Bombers. If a Pod escapes my smart
- bomb, then I try to avoid hitting it until the end of the wave;
- I don't want a screenfull of Swarmers keeping me from destroying
- the Landers.
-
-
- High Score Table
-
- Defender keeps track of the 5 highest scores. These scores are
- saved to disk (unless the disk is write-protected and/or removed
- from the disk drive).
-
- If your final score is among the top 5 all-time best, you will
- be given the option of entering your name in the Hall Of Fame.
-
- To enter your name, use the ARROW keys to position the cursor
- on the appropriate letter, then press the INSERT key. Click on
- the yellow arrow to delete the letter to the left. Click on
- the red arrow to enter your name into the Hall Of Fame. You
- may press the ESCAPE key to abort name entry.
-
-
- Optimizations
-
- For best results unload all TSRs and don't use a memory
- manager. By the way, a TSR is a Terminate and Stay Resident
- program (a.k.a. Memory Resident programs).
-
-
- Troubleshooting
-
- If you get an error message or DEFENDER doesn't start, try
- this: format a floppy using FORMAT A:/S then re-boot your
- system using this newly formatted floppy. Now try starting
- DEFENDER. If this doesn't work, then you probably have a bad
- copy of the program.
